One of the longest running and best known pulp webcomics out there is Tom Floyd's creation: CAPTAIN SPECTRE. I've known Tom for a while now, and have really enjoyed his webcomic and the work he's done for the Moonstone SPIDER anthology.
Well, the Captain had to take a bit of a hiatus there as Tom finished some Spider art and moved to a new location.

But now, he's back!

To honor the return of the good Captain, I did this piece of art for Tom to enjoy.

That's right, I've started a novel based on Ghost Zero. It's working title is MURDER MACHINE, and I plan for it to be the first in a series that expands on the webcomic adventure, adding depth to the GZ world. Here's the teaser:

"It’s 1948, and in Barron County, murder runs the roads. A series of weird hit-and-run killings get the attention of GHOST ZERO, the terrifying vigilante who can speak with the dead. Who or what is behind the grisly crimes? Can GHOST ZERO stop this menace without becoming a victim himself? Find out in THE MURDER MACHINE!"

Are you ready for another change? Gosh, I sure am!
I know, I know...I just changed the title of the comic from "Tales of the Revenant" to "Ghost Zero: Tales of the Revenant", and now I'm changing more? You betcha.
From now on, Eddie's last name is going to change from Shaw to Quick.
Why, do you ask? Well, it's all part of my evil plan.
You see the Ghost Zero story is going to unfold in three large segments:
GHOST ZERO: Tales of the Revenant
GHOST ZERO: Quick and the Dead
GHOST ZERO: Living Deadman

See that middle one? That's why I changed Eddie's name. I think it's a nice tie-in, and the name Eddie Quick just sounds more pulpish without going over the top. I was in the middle of working on my 8-page submission to Zudacomics (they go live tomorrow, by the way), and for some reason, had to stop and draw a cover. A cover that I can't even send in to Zuda (only 8 pages). That aside, I think it's my favorite piece of GZ art to date. Folks,

I know, I know...it's been since last month that I put up a post. Fear not! My silence is not from a lack of progress, but actually because of progress on er..silent kinds of things.

I'm about halfway through an 8-page short story called "The Fleshless Legion", which I plan on submitting to Zuda's comic competition probably in the middle of November. I was trying to keep a lid on it, as I am required to take the thing down once I submit it to them for evaluation. However...since you've been so patient and all....why don't I just put up one little page? How about the page I just finished (page 4)?

Pretty different, isn't it? I am using ComicLife to make the comic, it allows me to create single panels and drop them into a layout to put text over. It's very flexible, useful and affordable, but you do have to work with it to get the results you want. For instance, I'm going to have to go in and redo those first two speech balloons. I also made it so that we (the viewers) can actually see Charles, which is a bit more understandable than just a disembodied voice. Take a look while you can, I'll be taking the thing down sometime soon!

Take a look at a great vision of Ghost Zero that Eric Diaz put together! Not only is Eric an excellent and talented sculptor, but he's "got mad skills" with a pencil as well! Thanks, Eric!

A Rose by any other name......

Well, I've decided to change the name of the comic.

I know, I know. It was a tough decision, but I wanted something more original than REVENANT, especially since Shadowline is coming out with their own REVENANT comic. In my opinion, don't waste time competing...innovate!)

The tough thing was choosing a name that was destinctly pulpish, sounds like something a 14 year-old might choose, but also be something cool enough to last over decades. So, after going through handfulls of names, I settled on this:

Yep, GHOST ZERO. I think it has that pulp/B-movie feel that I was going for, and sounds like something Eddie might call himself. I doubt that Charles will care much what Eddie calls himself as long as the work gets done, but I think it will be (increasingly as we go along) important to Eddie to form an identity of his own....something that is obvious from the previous post with the 1958 costume.

So, look for this title on the next story I put out. We've gone from "HAUNTED: Tales of the Revenant" to "Tales of the Revenant" to "GHOST ZERO: Tales of the Revenant". Hopefully, this title will stick around!

Folks,

I had an inspiration of what Eddie could look like in about 10 years (for him). You didn't think that he would stay in that peacoat forever, did you?

Obviously as Eddie matures, he gets a definate idea of what image he'd like to present as the Revenant. This costume shows the assertion of his own personality, as well as a certain style for the times. There's less of Charles' influence here, and a bit more cold in Eddie's eyes. For better or worse, a new Revenant for a new time.

I've just gotten an email update from (the awesome) sculptor Eric Diaz, who has received all of the Revenant Resin busts, which make kind of an eerie sight....

Ahh! A Legion of Vigilante Ghosts!! Heh..heh..heh...it is pretty cool.

Eric also has a friend painting one up in a super-ghostly style with....GLOWING EYES! You better believe I'll show a pic of that when I get it!

The Ghost of Charles Pallentine

Hey, folks!

It's been just over a week since the end of the first TotR story, "Sea of the Dead!", and I'm happy to report that the scripting for the next story, an 8-page short called "The Fleshless Legion", is nearly complete! Although it will be short, I can promise that it will be packed with excitement. There will be trains, mummified soldiers from the civil war, flesh-eating gas, graveyards, and of course, ghosts!

A change I'm making in this story is that I actually intend to show the ghost of Charles Pallentine, not just Eddie talking to a disembodied voice from the ring. In case you've ever wondered what Charles might have looked like, here's a sneak peek!

End of "Sea of the Dead!"

Well folks, after 8 months of working every day, the first Revenant story has come to a close. It's been a great learning experience, and I've met some wonderful people.

...and I'm ready for more!

So..what's next?

Well, I just finished the illustrations to a great pulp book, Volume two of "Episodes from the Zero Hour!"

Ron has put together an awesome story in "Warrior's Heart".....when I read it, I had to do the illustrations! It's on sale right now at Lulu.com!

Now, with the obligation complete, I'm ready to begin work on the next "Tales of the Revenant" story, which I intend to submit to DC Comic's webcomic imprint Zuda Comics in October!

In the meantime, I'm investigating a piece of software called "Comic Life", which is a comic creation program that is typically out for Mac users, but is now at a beta stage. It's built a bit on the campy side, but there's some amazingly functional tools. Here's something that I just threw together as I was testing it out.....I thought it was pretty fun!

Anyway, I'll update as I get more information!

Wow.

It so happens that my best friend since middle-school, Doug McCord (kagandyne@yahoo.com), is one of the most talented figure painters I've seen. When he saw the Revenant kit, he took it home and painted obsessively for 3 days....and this is the result. Take a look!

Isn't that just AWESOME? I honestly didn't have a real concept of what Rev would look like in color until I saw Doug's work. He told me what a great job sculptor Eric Diaz did on the textures of the piece...they really have to be seen to be believed.

And just take a look at the box we're got going for the piece! It really does the kit justice.

Revenant in Resin!

More news on the Revenant statue! Eric Diaz has gotten the inital casts from the master mold, and they are spectacular in the amount of detail. Just take a look!

You can see that the bust comes in three pieces, the body and the two guns, and according to Eric the casting is so clean that it's really ready to go right out of the box. We're going to be offering the busts to the public for $65 dollars a piece, and we'll have them in hand by the end of the month. We're only doing 10 for our first run, and each will have a certificate of authenticity signed by Eric and myself. If you're interested in buying one, just send me an email!

We're also thrilled that the bust could be featured in the latest issue of "Amazing Figure Modeler Magazine"...which is a well produced mag that I think anyone would enjoy because it's just filled with amazing sculpts.

Also, I'm getting close to wrapping up the current Revenant story "Sea of the Dead!" and it's getting pretty intense! When this story is over, I'll probably take a few weeks off as I continue to develop the next story (tenatively called "The Phantom Engine") which may involve the launch of a new website.

TotR Screensaver!

I play around with Flash quite a bit, so I decided to do a screensaver for my webcomic character, The Revenant. It was inspired by the really excellent Operator #5 screensaver by Spider enthusiast extrodinnare, Chris Kalb! Here's a pic of the screensaver to give you an idea of what it looks like.

Eric Diaz and I have been excitedly sending emails back and forth about the Revenant bust...it's all prepped and is being shipped off for a trial cast!

Eric has but an INCREDIBLE amount of time and effort into detailing this guy....check out the texture of the peacoat!
We plan to cast the kit in gray resin so that you can paint it if you like, but it will be just as handsome left as-is.

You Don't Know Me

My wife and I got a digital camera this past week, and I wanted to try to do a classic, hollywood-style, black and white portrait of myself. Here's the result. Let me say a couple of things about it.

1. That pipe isn't a prop. It's one of seven I own (it's a Savinelli, in case you're interested) and smoke when the occasion permits. I've smoked a pipe for 17 years now, and consider it one of life's most pleasant luxuries.

2. The clothes aren't a prop. Yes, I actually wear these kinds of things. I happened to be wearing this particular arrangement to church that day.

3. The glasses aren't a prop. I needs 'em ta see!

I guess I realized with this photograph that the reason why I write (and enjoy) "Tales of the Revenant" so much is that...well...it fits right in with my life. I love old black and white horror movies, love listening to old radio shows (The Shadow) and read pulp-action stories, so doing this story is just the normal evolution of a mind that a little out of it's time. I'm glad it's finally coming around....I feel like I'm doing what I'm finally supposed to be doing.

About the next story:

I'm really jazzed about the story that's coming next, because I really consider "Sea of the Dead!" to be just a warm up...something to get me comfortable with the medium. In around 12 panels, the current story will end, after which I'll probably take a couple of weeks off and then unveil the start of the next book. I'm really excited, because it's the origin story....where Eddie gets the ring and meets Pallentine. Eddie lives in a fictional river town named 'Gath' (biblical home of David's 'Goliath') that seems like a nice, quiet place to grow up in. I'm basing the look after the town nearest where I grew up. Here's a picture I took this past weekend:

Charming, isn't it? Oh, don't worry, there's a bustling metropolis within driving distance, and Eddie will definately go there for some adventures, but here is where things start. I'm excited about it, and I hope you'll be too!

Garage Kit Ahoy!

Well folks, I've just gotten a really exciting email from my super-talented buddy Eric Diaz, who sculpted the incredible bust of the Revenant character. Remember it?

Oh yes, I thought you did! Anyway, we're in the works of making a series of resin kits from the bust so you can have one of your very own! Right now, we're talking about producing 20 just to see how things work out. When I get the price of the little buggers, I'll post it here.

Each of the kits will come with a certificate of authenticity signed by both Eric and me, and we're talking about the possibility of offering a couple of unusual casts...one to look like a bronze statue and one that is clear so that it can be rigged for light-up eyes! Oooo!

Even if you're not a fan of the comic, I think the sculpture will still have appeal because...well....look at it!)

Can you tell I'm excited?

I'll get you more information as we get it.

Oh-and before I forget, I finished the pencils for the next "Sea of the Dead!" panel....and it is awesome! I don't want to give too much away, but it's the panel I've been wanting to draw since I started the book. Keep your fingers crossed that the inking goes smoothly....if it does, I think I can guarantee a "wow".)

Mental Meanderings and updates

Geez..it's been a while!

One of the most interesting things that has happened since my last post is that I've been inducted into the "Pulp Factory", which is a great blog and yahoo group of the most die-hard pulp fans I've seen. It's great fun, and very active. It could be possible that I might be doing illustrations for an upcomming "Episodes of the Zero Hour" book. I'll let you know how that pans out!

Well, "Sea of the Dead" is actually in the final stretches of the story, and I've been doing some thinking. (uh oh!)

I've already been learning more about the markers that I've been using to shade my work (and I've just ordered some books about it online), and after comparing the first panels with the latest, I think it's pretty obvious to see that I've gotten more realistic and complex with the shading....which suits me to a "T"! (What the heck does that mean, anyway? Hmm...)

I'm also considering adding more panels to each post instead of a single panel. My inspiration for this is the Alex Raymond "Flash Gordon" newspaper strips.

I think they've got a great feel....I've even been thinking about using the text format that Alex used as well...it's very unique and gives as much weight to the text as the art. Of course, that will require a bit more planning on my part, but it would be an interesting experiment.

So...just what the heck will the next story be, you might ask? Well, I do have a fully scripted short story that is ready to go....but I have a terrible yearning to write and draw the origin story where Eddie finds the ring and meets Charles.

First thing is first, however....I've got to finish "Sea of the Dead" first!)

Panel 7 Preview!

Hmm...how does one introduce oneself to a cult dedicated to infernal magic during an initiation ceremony? Well, considering that one of the cultists is the man responsible for Charles Pallentine's death, I very much doubt a handshake is in order!

Let's consider the symbol that the Black Friars seem to be using, shall we? It appears to be an arrow, so if we do a cursory search for arrow symbology, we might find this:

"The arrow is a highly phallic image, evoking notions of piercing, penetrating masculinity, becoming the predominant symbol of the holy Father and of fathers in general. Related to this are the arrows of Cupid, the sharp ones of gold represent love, and the blunt ones of lead represent the dispelling of love. It is also associated with the rays of the sun, and with hunting. As the weapon of Apollo, it signifies the light of supreme power."

So, we've certainly got some very masculine imagery. You may also notice that it bears a resemblance to an inverted cross, also a testimony to their inverted faith.

On the whole, it's safe to say that these fellows wouldn't do "Relays for Life" or donate blood....but if its involuntary blood donation you have in mind...

You can see from the image that there's about to be some pain added to our little story....and I don't mean from the cultist brand! Is that the Revenant I spy in the upper left corner? That's right folks! I've decided not to post the full comic here, but I'm still going to give away secrets! Have you seen the latest panel? Here's next week's preview image!

I've got to say that I'm loving how the webcomic is looking! I'm still picking up tricks as we go along, especially in the lettering department, but its something that I'm really enjoying working on. In Panel 5, more of a conflict is evident between Eddie and Pallentine, a story element that will become very interesting in future episodes! And hey, this turns out to be out on Christmas Day, so.....Merry Christmas, everyone!

Sculpture update!

Eric Diaz (http://goldmane.net/Test/index.html) has just sent along another update to the Revenant bust, this one showing off the creeping drapery (hey, what are ghosts without drapes, eh?) that he's doing along the back of the sculpt. Awesome! It's very interesting seeing other folks interpretations of Rev, and how that influences the ways I think about the character....it brings up things that I never really thought of before.

Here's the second Panel of my pulp-action-supernatural-thriller story "Sea of the Dead!". In case you're wondering, Eddie is about 14 years old. Charles Pallentine, the original Revenant, was 42 when he died back in 1936.

Oh, did I mention that Eric was working on a bust of our favorite vigilante? Oh yes, my friend. Is he ever! While I've been toiling away on the Revenant Project, Eric has been losing sleep working on the bust and providing yours truly with some much, much appreciated advice. So...what's been going on since my last update? Lots! I scripted and did the thumbs for 12 comic pages for my first-ever story......and scrapped it. Why, you may ask? Because I came up with a much, much better idea. One that would fit right in with the period I'm writing about. Essentially, it is a one-panel strip updated regularly like you might see in a newspaper strip like Flash Gordan or Buck Rogers.

It's been a while since I've been able to post any material about my favorite skull-headed friend. Time to change that!
The comic project is fleshing itself out...slowly. I've come to the conclusion that I'm involved in too many side projects (like work, marriage, sleep) that distract me. Oh well. When I was expressing my frustration to Eric Diaz one day he said "Don't worry about slow progress. This story will come out, it's too awesome not to!" Many thanks to Eric for his kind support.
Speaking of Eric....
I'm posting a pic of the Revenant sculpt with base! It is still in the "rough" stage at the moment, but man.....it's awesome! Many thanks for the work, Eric!
I'm also posting a thumbnailed page from the comic (woah, a two-fer!) so that you can get a taste of the overall feel. This one features some nasty guys....so enjoy!

News about the Revenant Sculpture!

Hiya, folks!

I just got word (and picture!) from Eric Diaz, the incredibly talented sculptor who is working on the Revenant bust, that the ship is under way! It's in the roughing-in stage at the moment, but it's definately taking shape. You can review the bust sketches below to see the idea for the thing, and I'll post more pics from Eric as I get them. Well, the rough thumbnails have been completed, and the finish thumbnails are underway. If you're new to comics, the common method among comic artists (if there is a common one) is to do a series of small thumbnail sketches (usually 2"x3") followed by a more detailed, larger thumbnail (typically 4"x6") that will be enlared and lightboxed onto the full-sized artboard for final development and inking. As a treat, I'm posting the first page of the comic in finished thumbnail form.

Alright. Just who is the "Revenant"? Well, in his current incarnation, the Revenant is a 14 year old boy named Eddie living in the year 1948 who finds a ring that is haunted by the ghost of a pulp vigilante who died back in 1936. The vigilante ghost (who originally called himself the Revenant) uses his ghostly powers (along with Eddie's help) to avenge the deaths of murder victims. It's a tale of ghosts and gunplay, but the main part of the story (at least for me) is the relationship between Eddie and Charles Pallentine (the ghost in the ring).

You see, Eddie is a typical boy who thinks discovering and taking up the mantle of a pulp avenger sounds exciting....and it is....but hasn't really thought through that this means killing lots and lots of people. Sure, they're bad guys, but killing is still killing. Of course, Charles doesn't share his squeamishness a bit, so....there's bound to be conflict...and hopefully growth on both parts.

Heck, even I don't know what's going to happen.

The comic is something I've been wanting to do for some time....and it looks like the time is now! I've written the script for the first 12-page short....that'll either be published in print or online.....which I'll write more about later. There'll also be lots and lots of art. Speaking of which, I might as well show you the concept sketch of a sculpture that is being done by a great guy named Eric Diaz, from Gold Mane Enterpises (link on the side of the page). Eric's work is incredible....and he's been a fantastic help to the whole Haunted project. As he get's work done on it, I'll post pics here!
